The Open Chamionship….no need to put a name before the tournament it is…. because for 150 years it has been THE major. And being played at St. Andrews just adds to the elegance of the game of golf. Yes, a different type of golf than the traditional US courses such as Augusta National and Baltasrol. But this is where it all started. That’s what makes it so special. We have seen the greatest of all-time play this majestic course (Jones, Snead, Palmer, Nicklaus and of course Tiger), and hoisting the Claret Jug for their place in golfing history is the dream of every golfer that has ever played the game. What makes this time so special and must watch televison? A couple of things, such as possibly the last time we will see 2-time Open champion Tiger Woods stroll up the 18th fairway at St. Andrews. And the emotion he showed taking that walk. Just as Jack Nicklaus did in his last Open in 2005. Tugs at the heart strings like no other moment is sports history. But there are the “young guns” like McElroy, Rahm, Scheffler,  Smith, Cantley and many others trying to cement their place in golfing lore. And they will have to earn that distinction by playing the best golf of their life. On the grandest of all stages, on the most famous course of all time. Who will prevail remains to be seen on Sunday in Scotland, but whoever it is, he will have earned it. And he will always be remembered as a champion at The Old Course of St. Andrews. That can never be taken away from him. Doesn’t get any better than this.
