The first Saturday in May can only mean one thing in the world of sports….The Kentucky Derby! The best horses in the world take to the track in hopes of winning racing’s most prestigious race and becoming the talk of the town like American Pharoah and most recently Justify in winning the Triple Crown. But that can’t happen unless the horse can win in Kentucky. This years field is one of the most competitive in recent memory with no less than 10 of the 20 horse field legitimate contenders to win. That is what makes “the fastest 2 minutes in sports” such an exciting time for fans and non-fans alike. The two favorites this year are Zandon and Epicenter, and rightfully so. But so many factors like track conditions and post position are important in who will win the Run for the Roses. That is why I like 3 other horses to consider in the race. White Abarrio, Mo Donegal and Messier have all impressed in the pre-Derby races and should at least make it, dare I say, a horse race. Each one will be in the mix and one of them can finish first. So whether you are an established handicapper or you just play the horses name or jockey’s colors, you have a chance in the Kentucky Derby. That is what makes it a fun event for the sports fan and why Sports with Mono and Mono discusses it on our weekly podcast. Even though we cover all sports, my most memorable and favorite moment in all of sports was watching Secretariat win the Triple Crown with an incredible 31 1/2 win in the Belmont Stakes back in 1973. Still get chills from watching that footage over and over again. I venture to say we will never see such a dominant performance by an “athlete” again in any sport, but you never know. Maybe one of the Derby contenders in this years race will begin the goal of winning the Triple Crown and become a household name like the great Secretariat.  Post time is approx. 6:45 EST for the race so get your chores done before that so you can watch one of the best 2 minutes in sports! Good luck and enjoy the show!!!!!!
